Digital business card: the guide for Swiss companies

Updated on September 21, 2026

In short

A digital business card is an online profile with its own address that is shared by link, QR code or NFC and saved as a contact with a single tap. For companies, what counts is less the individual card than central management: consistent design, up-to-date details and cards that automatically follow joiners and leavers.

What is a digital business card?

A digital business card is a personal profile on the web with its own address. It shows your name, role, company, phone, email, website and social media profiles. Whoever opens the card saves the contact to their address book with a single tap, photo included.

The key difference from a paper card: the data lives online. If a role, a number or the logo changes, the card is updated once and is current everywhere it has already been shared.

Electronic, virtual or digital business card: is it the same thing?

Yes. "Electronic business card", "virtual business card", "e-business card" or "online business card" all mean the same: a contact profile on the web, shared by link, QR code or NFC. The wording has not settled yet; "digital business card" is the most common, tenders often say "electronic". It is not the vCard file sent by email: that is just one of the formats the card can be saved in.

How is a digital business card shared?

MethodHow it worksBest for
LinkThe card's address is sent by email, chat or in the email signature.Remote contacts, email signatures
QR codeThe other person scans the code with their camera, from a screen or from a printed card.Trade fairs, meetings, printed materials
NFCA card with a chip is held against the smartphone and the digital card opens.In-person meetings, field sales

All three methods lead to the same card, which is why it pays to combine them: a QR code on the printed business card, a link in the email signature and an NFC card for face-to-face conversations.

What should companies look for?

For a single person, almost any solution will do. For a company, other things matter, because you are dealing with dozens or hundreds of cards that need to look consistent and stay up to date.

  • Central management: who creates cards, who is allowed to change them? Roles for the owner, administrators and employees.
  • Corporate design: logo, colors and fonts are defined once and apply to everyone.
  • Joiners and leavers: a connection to Microsoft Entra ID or Google Workspace via SSO and SCIM, so cards follow the directory.
  • Multiple languages: in Switzerland, the card should work in at least German, French, Italian and English.
  • Data protection and contract: Swiss law, revFADP and GDPR, a clear data location.
  • Pricing model: a price per user grows with every hire; a fixed price per team stays predictable.

What does a digital business card cost?

International platforms charge teams an average of around USD 5 per user per month, often with separate tools on top for email signatures, QR codes or appointment booking. bizCARD bundles these functions and charges per team, in Swiss francs.

Do the math honestly: if all you need is digital cards for a small team, a price per user works out cheaper. As soon as signatures, QR codes, short links, appointments or printed cards come into play, the balance tips in favor of a platform.

Roll it out in five steps

  • Define the template: logo, colors, mandatory fields and the order of the details.
  • Run a pilot with five to ten people from sales and management.
  • Import the data or connect the directory instead of creating cards one by one.
  • Update printed materials: the QR code on the new business card, the link in the email signature.
  • After four weeks, check the statistics: which cards are opened, which contacts are saved?

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an electronic and a digital business card?

None. Both terms describe a business card that is a web page with its own address, shared by link, QR code or NFC. "Virtual" and "online" business card are further names for the same product.

Does the recipient need an app?

No. The card is a web page and opens in any browser. The contact is saved as a vCard, a standard that iPhone, Android, Windows and macOS understand without any extra software.

Does a digital business card replace the paper card?

Not necessarily. Many companies combine the two: a printed card with a QR code that leads to the digital card. The gesture of handing over a card stays, and the details behind it are always up to date.

What does a digital business card cost for a company?

There are free plans for individuals. For teams, international platforms average around USD 5 per user per month. bizCARD charges per team: CHF 49 per month for 5 people, CHF 149 for 20.

What about data protection?

The card contains employees' personal data. Look for a contract under Swiss law, compliance with the revised Federal Act on Data Protection (revFADP) and, if you have customers in the EU, with the GDPR. Ask the provider where the data is stored.

What happens when someone leaves the company?

You deactivate the card centrally. If the platform is connected to Microsoft Entra ID or Google Workspace via SSO and SCIM, this happens automatically as soon as the account is disabled in the directory.
